KOZHIKODE: District collector N. Prasanth in his capacity as chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority has ordered the Mukkam municipal secretary and DySP (Thamarassery) “to close functioning of the KMCT Medical College building till the compliance of the directions issued by the assistant divisional officer, fire and rescue Services, Kozhikode." The office of DySP, Thamarassery, received the order on Monday.

The order was issued under various sections of Disaster Management Act - 2005, to ensure the safety of hundreds of patients, medical students and others. An order based on the report of fire and rescue assistant divisional officer, Kozhikode, had issued on May 17 to get the fire and safety defects rectified appropriately and informed him within seven days, which the medical college management failed to execute.

A recent report of the fire and safety department said the building is still unsafe in fire protection point of view. The parties had violated the fire and safety rules for ensuring fire protection, and an impending disaster is looming large if they do not comply with them immediately, the order said.
