Low pressure brewing over Bay, says Met office
Mild showers on New year's eve due to easterlies.
Chennai: A few hours after the northeast monsoon came to a close (December 31), Chennai received some showers on Saturday night escalating the joy of New Year celebrations.
South Chennai received a mere 1.2 mm of rainfall facilitating a pleasant day.
While the other parts of the state experienced dry condition, Nagapattinam witnessed 1.8 mm on Sunday. According to weather experts, showers were a result of the prevalence of easterlies in the state.
“Prevalence of easterlies is a common phenomenon that could be witnessed till mid-January, even though the monsoon period officially ends on December 31,” said Hrishi Jawahar, Kea Weather blogger.
Fair, seasonal weather conditions will prevail in the southern districts for the next few days, said weather department officials, adding that fog conditions are already visible in the northern districts. Except for isolated showers, the state will have clear skies for the next two days.
Formation of fresh system confirmed
As reported by Deccan Chronicle earlier, weather department officials confirmed the formation of a fresh disturbance in the next 48 hours.
In a bulletin released by the Regional Meteorological Centre on Sunday, it was stated that a ‘fresh low pressure area is likely to form over
South Andaman sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal around January 5.’
Echoing the same, weather blogger, Jeetender Kumar said, “A low pressure is likely to form in the next 48 hours south of Sri Lanka. A clear picture about further development will be known only at the latter stages. We are closely monitoring the weather models.”
Colder nights at Nilgiris
The tourist spots of the state, which have been witnessing colder nights for the past few days, would continue to remain the same as the minimum temperature is hovering around 4 degrees at Nilgiris.
There is no further dip in the temperature for the next few days, added weather bloggers. Misty, fog conditions are noted at the hilly regions in North Tamil Nadu, downing the visibility here.
“Hilly regions of Arakonam, Vellore and Ambur and the southern suburbs of Chennai are witnessing fog conditions,” added Jeetender Kumar.
