Hyderabad: PG courses will be hit this year with officials refusing affiliations for M.Tech, M.Pharm and MBA courses to most colleges. Engineering colleges are among those denied affiliation for some course for not meeting the required guidelines.

Engineering Colleges’ Association says the number of colleges granted affiliation this time would be less than last year. According to department officials, CBIT and MGIT, considered to be premier engineering institutions, may lose out on a few courses (mostly PG) for not fulfilling teaching faculty requirements.

However, CBIT chief placement officer Mr N.L.N. Reddy said that CBIT was the only engineering college from Telangana to figure in the National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the Human Resources Development ministry.

Telangana Private Engineering Colleges Association president Mr N. Gautham Rao said that officials were sending affiliation reports to colleges. The last of them may receive it by Saturday, he added.

“The final figure of colleges granted affiliation for 2016-17 will be in the range of 170 to 180. Last year the number was around 260. About 30 colleges did not apply for affiliation while some sought permanent closure. Some did not fulfill the JNTU requirements and faced the axe at the vigilance inspections,” he said.

The joint inspections had identified several loopholes in the engineering college standards with some lacking infrastructure and some faculty and labs.

However, there were differences in the reports. While the Vigilance department identified 26 colleges lacking infrastructure, the JNTU listed another 18 colleges. However, there was consensus in both JNTU and Vigilance reports on 24 colleges that failed to meet guidelines.

Meanwhile, the Admission Fee Regulatory Committee (AFRC) has finalised the fee-structure for undergraduate engineering courses that will be applicable from 2016-18. The lowest fee was fixed at Rs 35,000 per annum while in colleges with top facilities it will be Rs 1.13 lakh per annum.
