Thiruvananthapuram: Log book to stop dumping of chicken waste
Several traders still dump waste on the road to avoid paying service fee
Thiruvananthapuram: The city Corporation has directed poultry traders to keep log books in order to avoid poultry waste from ending up on streets and water bodies. The Corporation has entrusted a firm called Amala Eco Clean to clear waste from chicken stalls in 2014. However, several traders continue to dump the waste on the road to avoid paying a service fee of Rs 3 per kilogram of chicken waste.
Consequently, the city Corporation has asked all licensed chicken stall owners to maintain a log book of load they procure and the waste they give to the firm. This will be cross checked with the logs of the firm to find offenders. “It has been noted that most of the waste that land up on road sides are chicken waste. Some chicken stalls have their own waste management facility. The others who do not have these facilities should follow the directive,” the city Corporation said in a statement.
Those who do not abide by the law will have their licences cancelled, added the statement. Areas such as Vallakadavu, Akkulam and streets that lead to NH bypass are regular dumping zones. However, officials said the system may not be foolproof as chicken waste from the outskirts of the city also sometimes finds its way here.
