Kerala: Attempt to torpedo merit in medical seat allotment alleged

KOZHIKODE: The self-financing colleges have urged the government to stop the spot admission for NRI seats after the allotment as there was an alleged attempt to torpedo merit in allotting seats by covertly giving the seats to the rich and influential candidates. MES chairman Dr Fazal Gafoor,  representing the self-financing college managements, told reporters here that  moves were on in the office of the entrance commissioner to allot NRI seats to the rich and the kith and kin of the influential. There were plans to approach the court against this nepotism and corruption, he added.

The vacant NRI seats after the NRI allotment should be re-allotted in tune with the merits of applicants, he said.  To convert NRI seats into general seats,   a re-counselling should be conducted for accommodating the merited and deserving. The present allotment of vacant NRI seats as general seats failed to do justice to the deserving persons.    Those students who were at the top in the rank list had gone by the time the office of the entrance commissioner allotted NRI seats as general seats to many.  “Now those who managed to be in the list are those from  the bottom of the list which would affect the quality of health service  in the long run,”  he added.
