Kannur: Nine held in two attacks on police

Cases were registered against 23 people, who attended the festival and turned violent when the police asked them to turn off the sound system

KANNUR: The police arrested nine persons on Tuesday in connection with two attacks on them in the district and seized weapons from them. One person was taken into custody.  Five policemen,  including an additional SI and an ASI, were injured in clashes that erupted at a temple festival at Chalad, Kannur, on Saturday. Cases were registered against 23 people, who attended the festival and turned violent when the police asked them to turn off the sound system.

However, they were released later and eight other people were arrested after a detailed probe, said  police sources. The committee did not have prior permission to perform the orchestra in connection with the festival at Shri Dharmasasta temple, said the police.  At 10 pm, the police  asked them to turn off the sound system, which was delayed till 10.45 p.m. When it was turned off,  the mob turned violent and attacked the cops. 

The arrested are Dharamjith (21), Nikil (25), Rajesh (28), Sharon (25), Amjith (24), Gokul (20), Vaishak (21) and Rashad (29). The other incident took place at Kadirur when two countrymade bombs were hurled at  the police patrol. One of the accused, Prabesh (24), was arrested within 24 hours. Sources said  that based on his disclosure, two swords and two iron rods were seized.  The second accused Swaraj was taken into custody from Government Medical College hospital, Kozhikode. The police are trying to find out the involvement of more people in the incident.
