Bengaluru: The state government has decided to appoint former Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Dhirendra Hiralal Waghela as the next State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) Chairman.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that members of the selection committee had unanimously cleared the name of Justice Waghela for the post.

However, another meeting to select members of the Information Commission could not finalise the list.

Mr Siddaramaiah said that a background check of the candidates had to be completed before appointing the members.

The SHRC has been headless since Justice S.R. Nayak retired as chairman in July 2012. Only chief justices, including retired justices of the high court, are   eligible for this high profile post.
