HC seeks clarity on quota for transgender candidates

HYDERABAD: A two-judge bench of the Telangana High Court on Friday directed the Centre and the National Medical Commission to seek instructions regarding reservation of seats for social and economically backward transgender community. The bench, comprising Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili and Justice Pulla Karthik, was dealing with a writ plea filed by Dr Ruth Paul challenging the NEET 2023 notification, which did not mention reservation of seats for transgender candidates. The petitioner contended that the notification violated the Supreme Court judgment which clearly directed the Union and state governments to provide reservation to socially and educationally backward class transgender candidates. The matter was adjourned to Tuesday.

HC tells collector to take clarity after donor seeks return of land

Justice S. Nanda of Telangana High Court directed the district collector and revenue divisional officer (RDO) of Mahbubnagar to seek instructions in a matter pertaining to returning a piece of land to the donor as the beneficiary had defaulted. The judge was dealing with a writ plea filed by B. Prabhavathama, who is seeking action against the respondents who had failed to use the three acres of land that she donated for the construction of a primary healthcare centre. She contended that although the property was donated more than two decades back, no PHC has come up till date. In view of the same, the petitioner sought ownership and possession of land. The matter has been adjourned for the government to explain its stance.

HC posts appeal of two rape convicts for Monday 

Justice N. Tukaramji of Telangana High Court heard an appeal filed by two people convicted of rape. A criminal appeal was filed by V. Satish and another in 2014 for quashing and setting aside their conviction of 20 years. The petitioners were convicted in a case in which a 22-year-old woman was abducted and raped. The petitioners were convicted by the metropolitan sessions court of Cyberabad. The matter has been adjourned to Monday for further hearing.
