Bengaluru: In an attempt to resolve perennial clogging and overflowing drains at Ejipura and National Games Village (NGV), the BWSSB Friday laid foundation stone to construct a 210 Million Litres per Day (MLD) capacity Intermediate Sewage Pumping Station (ISPS) at Koramangala sports complex. Laying the foundation stone, Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy said that water logging at Ejipura is due to the lack of natural gradient in the drains and increased sewage flow due to rapid urbanisation. Once the facility is commissioned, sewage from the area will get pumped to Koramangala and Challaghatta Valley Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), he added.

The project is estimated to cost Rs 38.61 crore and is likely to be completed in two years. The BWSSB has also allocated Rs 9.23 crore towards operation and maintenance of the plant for seven years, he added.

Along with Mr Reddy the foundation stone was also laid by Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George.

The existing Kormangala Valley sewerage gravity catchment extends from Majestic Area in the west. It is troublesome as many of the sewers were laid long ago and the layouts are too complex. The lack of natural gradient across the catchment has led to extensive silting and blocking, which has, in turn, resulted in the diversion of sewage into drainages.
