Kochi: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will hold a key review meet on the progress of the Kochi Metro project here on Saturday, the final one before the 13-km Aluva-Palarivattom stretch will be commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 17. “The Chief Minister will visit the Palarivattom station at 11 am and hold talks with the officials of the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL). He will then inaugurate the solar power system for the Kochi Metro at Aluva station,” a spokesperson said. The KMRL is placing solar panels on the rooftop of 22 stations and the buildings in the Metro yard. The installation capacity of the rooftop project is four MW. Solar panels are also being set up at its unused plots in Muttom yard.

“The detailed project report for the four megawatt solar power project will be prepared soon and the tender documents are getting ready. We estimate that we can set up solar panels in a 40,000-sq m land,” the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, the review meet tomorrow is vital as metro officials expect the Prime Minister to announce the approval of the union government for the Kochi Metro’s second phase from Jawaharlal Nehru stadium to Kakkanad. “The meet will discuss preparations for the second phase, including appointment of a consultant,” sources said.
