KOZHIKODE: A team led by additional tahsildar (land reforms) Anitha Kumari started inspection of  chicken and beef stalls in the city on Friday based on the direction of the district collector. The team found many drawbacks,  including unhygienic practices and faulty waste disposal methods,  in the stalls. The inspection will continue in the coming days in other parts of the city.  The team inspected nine meat stalls at  Vellayil, Moonnalingal, Francis Road and Kinassery.   Corporation health officer Dr R. S. Gopakumar said that meat stalls were  not properly disposing of the waste.

“The waste water, including  blood,  is directed to the drainage. Lack of hygienic practices is also a problem in the stalls. In the coming days, we will conduct inspections in more meat stalls,” he said.  The report on the inspection will be submitted to the collector. “During the inspections, we are looking into different aspects such as hygiene, waste water treatment, waste disposal method and inspecting the Dangerous and Offensive Trade (D&O) licence issuing by the corporation. Reports on each stall is prepared  on the spot and would be submitted  to the collector,” he added. The team inspected six chicken stalls and three beef stalls.

At  Francis Road, a section of people argued with the team over the waste sacks piled up by the corporation for disposal. They said  that the corporation should take action in removing those bags of waste instead of acting against the poor meat sellers. A vehicle which carried waste items without proper documents was also seized by the team. Corporation veterinary surgeon Dr Linoop  and health inspector C.K. Rajeevan  among others were part of the team.
