Special session to take up curbs on cattle slaughter on June 8
The ruling and opposition parties will put on record their opposition to Centre's controversial notification.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A special session of the Assembly will be convened here on June 8 to discuss the Centre’s notification imposing strict restrictions on sale of cattle for slaughter. At the special session, the ruling and opposition parties will put on record their opposition to the Centre’s controversial notification. While the government is keen to have a unanimous resolution passed against the central notification, it may not happen because of lone BJP member O. Rajagopal’s pro-Centre stand. It is not clear whether the BJP member would attend or abstain from the session.
The ruling LDF and opposition Congress-led UDF are on the same page on slaughter ban issue. Kerala Congress (Mani) which is unattached at the moment has also taken anti-Centre position on the issue. Though the UDF is not cooperating with chief minister Pinarayi Viayan’s move to convene all chief ministers’ meet against Central notification here, it is backing the government on all other issues related to slaughter ban. Earlier, the chief minister had taken the initiative to write letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding the rollback of restrictions on cattle slaughter. He had also written to the chief ministers urging them to oppose the notification which amounted to direct attack on the federal structure of the country .
