Twelve doctors retire from Kozhikode Medical College Hospital
Blow to hospital already reeling under staff shortage
KOZHIKODE: Including the principal Dr V.P Sasidharan, 12 doctors have retired from the Kozhikode Medical College hospital (MCH). The list includes Anatomy Professor Dr K.S Krishna Kumari, Anatomy Professor Dr Govindaraj, Pediatrics Head of the Department (HoD) Dr K.R Subbaraman, Gastroen-terology HoD Dr Vargeesh K. Thomas, Dr Annamma (Pediatric surgery), Obstetrics and Gynec-ology HoD Dr Sumangala Devi D, Psychiatry Additional Professor Dr Ashok Kumar, Derma-tology and Venerealogy Additional Professors Dr M.P Binitha and Dr K. Muhammad, Anaesthesi-ology HoD Dr K.T Ramdas and Physical Education Assistant Professor Dr M.K Shelvaraj.
The posts that have fallen vacant have made MCH’s situation worse because it is already reeling under the shortage of doctors since the inception of a government medical college in Manjeri during the last government’s tenure. Doctors and nurses were temporarily shifted there for the Medical Council of India (MCI) inspection. The department of Anaesthesiology has an acute shortage of doctors and its HoD has retired. “At present, the hospital has been running with the support of house surgeons and PG doctors. If the posts are not filled immediately it would affect smooth functioning,” said a senior doctor who requested anonymity.
Dr Sasidharan was a student at Calicut Medical College (CMC) in 1976. He became tutor in Transfusion Medicine department at MCH in 1988 and later professor at Thiruvananthapuram government medical college. Dr Sasidharan was the MCH Superintendent during 2006 to 2015. A musical exponent, he holds the Sangeet Visharad degree in Hindustani Music.
