VMC starts cleaning three Vijayawada canals
VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has started cleaning the Bandar, Eluru and Ryves canals passing through the city under the Mission Clean Krishna Godavari Canals.
VMC commissioner Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar inspected the three canals on Friday along with officials. He gave several suggestions to officials on cleaning of the canals. The civic body has engaged 600 sanitation workers to clean the city’s canals.
The commissioner noticed garbage piled up near the Eluru locks and wanted it cleaned immediately. He said they are focussing on checking plastic pollution, which is a major element that clogs the canals.
Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar said steps have already been taken by VMC to prevent and control usage of single-use plastic in and around the city. Incidentally, he has recently returned after attending a meeting of “International Forum to End Plastic Pollution in Cities” in Paris from May 25 to May 28.
The commissioner said they studied the best practices in preventing and controlling plastic waste. He underlined that canal bunds will be beautified and it will be ensured that people do not dump garbage or construction waste beside the three canals in the city.
