Tripunithura gears up for Athachamayam

Town to host the state-sponsored Atham pageantry

The procession which used to be organized by the Cochin royal family, is now hosted by the Tripunithura municipality.

KOCHI: The royal town of Tripunithura is gearing up for the famous Athachamayam which heralds the beginning of the 10-day Onam celebrations in the state. The famed Atham pageantry, sponsored by the state government in which hundreds of people participate, will be held on Sunday. The procession which used to be organized by the Cochin royal family, is now hosted by the Tripunithura municipality.  

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the public meeting ahead of the Atham procession at the Boys’ High School at Atham Nagar. M. Swaraj, MLA, will preside. Municipal chairperson Chandrika Devi will receive the Atham flag on Saturday from Cochin royal family representatives on the Hill Palace premises.

As always, the cultural procession will have a traditional touch. School students dressed in different attires, traditional art forms, folk arts such as puli kali, theyyam, ottanthullal, kummatti, kolkali, karakattam and tableaux depicting various social issues and scenes from epics and musical ensembles will be part of the procession.
