October and November are favourable months for wild dogs to breed. This year, the weather also seems to be favourable for them due to the copious rainfall during the southwest monsoon season and the presence of green cover in the zoo. DC file photo

Divya, a female sloth bear, died at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Vizag on Thursday. The zoo officials expressed grief over the death of one of zoo’s beloved resident.

In a press release, the zoo officials said that the 20-year-old animal died due to chronic renal failure. Divya was born at the Visakhapatnam zoo in 2003. The average life span of a sloth bear is around 15-20 years in the wild.

IGZP curator Nandini Salaria, IFS, said that zoo now has two other sloth bears. An 18-year-old lioness Maheswari died due to severe myocardial infraction on September 23, 2023.
