Cyclone Ockhi: Revenue department estimates loss at Rs 7.5 crore

Thiruvananthapuram: The revenue department has estimated the preliminary losses from rain calamities at Rs 7.5 crore. Idukki district suffered the most - Rs 4 crore. The Ockhi cyclone left 56 houses fully damaged and 679 partially. Village officers have been asked to give details of people who are missing in their locality. They had shifted 529 families who lost their houses in heavy rains and winds to 20 camps.
Meanwhile, Mullaperiyar subcommittee under the supervisory committee appointed by the Supreme Court visited the dam in the wake of surging waters on Saturday. However, it failed to hold a meeting as one of the two representatives from Tamil Nadu abstained saying it was on short notice. Chairman of the subcommittee Rajesh Das was camping in Thekkady for a day. The water level of the dam reached 130 ft on Saturday. The water inflow was 6,289.77 cubic feet second, and Tamil Nadu released water at 1,600 cft. The dam had witnessed a sudden jump in the water level, rising by six feet to 127.9 feet in a single day on Friday.
