KANNUR: One fisherman was killed when a high-mast light fell on him at Ayikkara harbor near here on Saturday morning. The victim has been identified as Pavithran, a native of   Thayyil. The high-mast light came down in the strong wind. Fishermen alleged that for the last many months the high-mast had remained dysfunctional. Pavithran and his friends were in the harbour to repair the fishing net as none of the finishing boats ventured out to the sea due to bad weather and Ockhi cyclone warning.

S Bijoy, a native said that though they had demanded long for the repairing of the light none of the authorities took it seriously.   Almost all the street lights of the harbor are in a damaged condition as the masts were rusted, he added. When the district administration directed the harbor authorities to light up the area, the harbor authorities had brought emergency lights from outside, it was pointed out.
Pavithran is survived by wife Suja, children Rajasree, Nishanth, Sreenisha.
