Chennai: Teachers belonging to the Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers’ Federation on Friday tried to besiege the DPI campus in Chennai with a 15-point charter of demands including salary on par with the Central government teachers and scrapping the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

“We have already conducted two phase protests at the block level and district level. The federation had submitted memorandums to the government, but no action was taken. The state government must fulfil our demands,” said C. Balachander, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers’ Federation.

Police evicted the teachers from the venue and took them to Rajarathinam stadium in Egmore. Subsequently, teachers’ representatives, including the president of the federation S. Moses, held talks with the school education secretary D. Sabitha at the secretariat.

“Apart from the demands which related to the finance department, all our demands were accepted by the school education department,” Balachander said.

“The secretary assured to issue orders to fill the scavengers’ posts in all schools. She also assured us that all the schools will receive computers and net connection very soon,” he said. Other teacher associations also have extended their support to the protest.
