CPM takes to organic farming

The CPM has already set up 12 outlets in the district for marketing organically produced vegetables and fruits.

KOCHI: The CPM’s organic farming venture Jaiva Jeevitham is expanding to more areas in the city. As part of the initiative, the party cultivated vegetables on 20 cents of land at Poonithura, which turned out to be a big success. Vegetables like cucumber, spinach and cowpea have been grown with the technical support of Sterling Farm and Research Centre.

CPM district secretary P. Rajeev inaugurated the harvesting on Saturday. Dr Sebastian Paul, Poonithura Service Cooperative Bank president E. G. Soman and Sterling managing director Sivadas B. Menon were also present.

Corporation councillor V.P. Chandran said organic farming will be expanded to other parts of the division with the objective of producing safe-to-eat vegetables for Onam. The CPM has already set up 12 outlets in the district for marketing organically produced vegetables and fruits.
