Chennai: Accident on GST road claims four lives
Lorry smashed into bus killing class five student Elakya on the spot.
Chennai: Four passengers including a 10-year-old girl and 2 women were killed and five others injured when the government bus in which they were travelling was hit by a lorry in Kannabiranpuram on Saturday morning. The deceased were identified as R Elakya, 10, a native of Uthiramerur, Mary Lilly, 36 of Maduranthagam, Annammal, 70, from Cheyyur and Marimuthu from Thiruvannamalai.
Police said that the driver of the bus, plying from Maduranthagam to Mahabalipuram via Chengalpet, had halted the bus on the side of GST Road at around 7.30 am, sensing some engine trouble. The driver of an empty sand lorry lost control and smashed into the stationary bus from behind. Elakya, a class V girl, who was returning to her parents after spending the summer vacation in a relative's place, and Marimuthu died on the spot while the other two died in the hospital.
The injured were admitted to Chengalpet GH. Police said that the driver of the lorry escaped from the accident scene immediately after the mishap. The road mishap led to a traffic snarl on GST road for more than one hour.
