DCC president T. N. Prathapan, Anil Akkara, MLA, visit Thrissur MCH where clearance of waste has been stopped since the onset of monsoon.

Thrissur: The DCC has announced a clean-up drive at the  Medical College Hospital at  Mulamkkunathukkavu here  in view of the lack of a proper waste disposal system there. It will be held from June 10 to July 2, DCC president T.N. Prathapan  said. The district functionaries of the party on Saturday visited the gynaecology ward of the MCH where food and hospital waste had been dumped.“We spoke to the hospital authorities and asked them to clear the waste before Tuesday. If they fail to do that, the party volunteers will do it. The waste disposal mechanism at the hospital is in a shambles,” he added.

The drive would be led by Mr Anil Akkara MLA. The medical college premises would be completely cleaned as a part of the drive, DCC functionaries said after their visit. Hospital sources say that they do not have any incinerator to burn waste.  After the DYFI started a lunch distribution programme for the inmates by providing food packets from the homes of their workers, the packets were  dumped inside the MCH on the ramp used to take patients on stretcher during emergencies.

This has exaggerated the waste issue as nearly 3000 food packets are distributed by the organization  a day.   The ramp of the first floor  and the second floor are now filled with the waste.  The usual method of dumping the waste in a large pit on the hospital compound and burning it could not be done at present after the onset of the monsoon, hospital sources said. A sum of Rs 80 lakh  was earlier allotted to the hospital by the state government  for an incinerator and the issue could be solved permanently by installing it.
