Kozhikode: Motor Vehicles Department's plan for GPS tracking scrapped
Technical glitches and lack of fund cited as reasons.
Kozhikode: The long-term plan of the Motor Vehicles Department to install a GPS-based truck tracking and management solution for the safe transportation of LPG and LNG products has suffered a setback.
The proposal submitted to the state transport department for the launch of such a technology has been scrapped citing technical glitches and lack of fund.
As per the MVD proposal, after the installation of the tracking device in the vehicles, the officials can control their movement.
“The project was not charted as viable by the state transport department citing practical issues.
Keltron, which has designed the technology, submitted an estimate of Rs 20 lakh for its implementation, which was also dismissed,” said Regional Transport Officer C.J. Paulson.
Joint Transport Commissioner, Enforcement, Rajeev Puthalath, who envisaged the project, said, “we thought of launching a tracking device after a tanker lorry carrying 18 tonnes of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) belonging to the Indian Oil Corporation from Mangalore caught fire at Kalliasseri near Kannur.” A detailed proposal was even sent to the previous government, but it was scrapped citing it as an extra burden.
“We will again put forward the proposal before the people concerned,” he added. The device could help in getting an analysis of the patrolling operations, including real time tracking vehicles, status reports of vehicles including speeding, deviation from pre-planned routes, unusual stoppage, parking, violation of entry and exit points, time and stoppage,” he said.
