Research to curb earthquake damages
Dr Sahni delivered the inaugural address at the 54th annual Convention of the Indian Geophysical Union.
Hyderabad: Frontier research on earthquakes is the only way to minimise the damage caused by them, according to Dr Girish Sahni, director-general of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR).
Dr Sahni delivered the inaugural address at the 54th annual Convention of the Indian Geophysical Union. “We need more interdisciplinary app-roach to study earthquakes. Physicists, chemists and professionals from other disciplines are needed to ensure that better research is done.”
A catalogue containing information about all earthquakes since 1965, their time, location of occurrence, and their causes, was released at the convention.
Students from IIT Roorkee, Andhra Uni-versity, BR Ambedkar University, and Osmania University received awards for their studies on earthquakes and seismographs.
Dr D. Srinagesh, chief scientist at the National Geophysical Research Institute, said, “It cost us $50,000 to set up an observatory 50 years ago. Now, we are able to conduct research on earthquakes. In 1967, the largest reservoir-triggered earthquake hit Maharashtra, and NGRI recorded it. 50 years later, our data is still used in world-class publications.”
