Kakinada: Cargo operations were suspended at the Kakinada Deep Water Port and the Anchorage Port in Kakinada on Sunday due to huge gales affecting the Michaung cyclone.

As many as eight ships were anchored at Deep Sea in Anchorage port.

On Sunday, six ships reached the deep water port. But due to the rough weather, the ships were shifted to the anchorage port for anchoring. Huge waves rose up to 3 metres of height at Hope Island.

The cargo handling of fertilizers, granite, parboiled rice etc was stopped due to the rough weather. Port officials hoisted Distinct Warning Signal Number-II with section signal number IV at Kakinada port.

Meanwhile, the two erstwhile east and west Godavari districts felt the impact of the Michaung cyclone in the Bay of Bengal on Sunday, which was a windy and cloudy day.

The branches of trees in many places fell on the power lines and the power supply was disrupted in these areas. Electricity personnel immediately attended to this, cleared the branches and restored the supply. The trees were uprooted at the Collectorate in Kakinada.

West Godavari collector P Prashanthi cautioned the people in low-lying areas to move to safer places as the cyclone would strengthen and heavy rains are predicted.

The people of the cyclone-affected areas should reach the cyclone rehabilitation centres as per advice given by the officials, she asked the Rythu Bharosa Kendras and appealed to the farmers to shift their paddy to safer places.

The collector visited Sivadevuni Chikkala, Ballipadu, Dagguluru, Thillampudi, Velivela and Lankala Koderu villages of Palakollu mandals and requested the farmers to shift their paddy to the RBKs. “Officials must ensure that not even a single paddy is damaged due to rains,” she said.

The Achanta, Narsapuram, Mogalturu and Yalamanchili mandals would be affected due to the cyclone, the collector said.

Civil supplies minister Karumuri Nageswara Rao visited Varighedu, Tirupathi Puram, Ballipadu and other villages in Attili mandal and interacted with the farmers. He urged the farmers to shift their harvested paddy to nearby rice mills and that the paddy would be purchased offline. He asked the millers to cooperate with the farmers during this crucial period.

Civil supplies corporation district manager Sivaram Prasad, Attili tahsildar Ramanjaneyulu and others were present. Kakinada collector Kritika Shukla said control rooms have been set up in the collectoate, and RDO offices in Kakinada and Peddapuram.

Meanwhile, the Kadapa district administration sounded all mandals over the possible impact of cyclone on Dec 4 and 5. Control rooms were set up in Kadapa, Jammalamadugu, Badvel and Pulivendula RDO offices to function round the clock.

Kadapa collector Vijaya Ramaraju observed that possible heavy rains with gusty winds were likely and the people care for their safety. There could be breaches to irrigation tanks and canals.

He advised irrigation and revenue teams to keep ready the sand bags to arrest water flow from breaches in canals and tanks, so as to save standing crops. Police teams should take necessary bandobast at the main roads connected to canals that overflow.

Rains lashed several mandals in Kadapa and Annamayya district on Sunday.
