Coimbatore: City-based PSG Hospital organised a felicitation programme on Thursday for children who underwent cochlear implant surgery at the centre.

The first surgery was performed in May 2016. The surgical procedure is performed to enable hearing in a deaf child.

At the hospital, the cochlear implant procedure is performed under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme and 200 children have benefited.

"The Chief Minister's insurance scheme provides cochlear implant free of cost to all congenital hearing loss children less than six years of age.” said a source from the hospital.

“So far, 200 children under the age of six years who have registered under the scheme have successfully undergone the procedure and are doing fine with good hearing outcomes. The entire procedure is performed free of cost and this includes pre-implant evaluations such as CT, MRI scans and audio logical evaluation," a source from the hospital added.

Hearing impairment is a very common congenital anomaly in newborns.

About six out of every 1,000 children are affected by hearing impairment. Early detection of hearing impairment is very important for a better audio-verbal outcome.
