234 areas prone to water-logging in Hyderabad
Drainage on these roads a tough task.
HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Traffic Police released a list of 234 areas that are often waterlogged during the monsoon, leading to traffic jams. These areas have been identified by the traffic policemen who have seen traffic jams at these points every monsoon when water stagnates. “The draining of these roads has always been a tough task due to potholes, drainage issues etc. We have handed over the list to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and work has already begun. Out of the 234 points we had identified, 27 were crucial according to the traffic flow, width of road, age of construction etc. The area under the Malakpet bridge has always been a perpetual headache during the monsoon due to waterlogging. Out of these, 20 points have been worked on to ensure free flow of water and work is commencing in other areas. It is nice to note that our work is yielding results,” says Deputy Commissioner of Police, P. Papaiah, Hyderabad City Police.
The listed areas include roads at Banjara Hills. Charminar, Begumpet, Abids and Nampally. The police claim that no accidents happen due to waterlogging. However, traffic jams that require extra personnel and time occur during the monsoon. The Cyberabad Traffic personnel have also listed potential waterlogging areas in L.B Nagar, Uppal and Madhapur. “We are very happy to note that the work has already started in many areas and water diversion through extra pipelines has begun. GHMC has also handed out disaster kits to all police stations. So if a tree falls due to heavy rain, we can remove it with the help of GHMC personnel. We have tried to ensure that there is no obstruction of traffic whatsoever due to rains,” says Additional DCP. N. Divyacharan Rao, Rachakonda commissionerate.
