Thiruvananthapuram: Govt to implement SC order on Church row
The Orthodox faction wanted the government to implement the judgment.
Thiruvananthapuram: The state government is trying to implement the Supreme Court order on the Malankara Church dispute by evolving a consensus between the Jacobite and Orthodox factions, according to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
“The government is committed to implementing the judgment and its stand is impartial,” he said in reply to a submission by Antony John of the CPM in the Assembly on Thursday.
The government will not allow any clashes that would lead to the locking up of the churches, he said.
The Supreme Court had lashed out at the state for not implementing its 2017 judgment in favour of the Orthodox faction in the prolonged dispute on the management of numerous parishes.
The Supreme Court had upheld the 1934 constitution of the church and dismissed a dozen review petitions filed by the Jacobite faction.
The Orthodox faction wanted the government to implement the judgment.
The dispute is over the authority of the Patriarch of Antioch on the Malankara Church. While the Orthodox faction has rejected his authority, the Jacobite faction has accepted him as the supreme temporal authority of the Malankara Church.
