Amrit Sarovar inaugurated at AOC Centre

Hyderabad: Lieutenant General Ajay Kumar Singh, General Officer Commanding in Chief (GOC-in-C), Southern Command, inaugurated the Amrit Sarovar developed by the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) at the AOC Centre here on Friday.

This pond is part of the 50,000 sites identified across the country under the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ mission to be completed before August 15.

Over 11,000 medicinal and herbal plant saplings have been planted around the point. Natural shrubs have been planted on its bund to make a natural bio-retaining wall. A pathway has been created for walking, with lighting and seating. It also has an open gymnasium and figure ‘8’ walking track right next to the sarovar.

The Centre had launched mission ‘Amrit Sarovar’ with the overall aim to create at least 75 sarovars in every district. Taking toward the initiative of rejuvenating and developing the points which will play an essential role in water harvesting and its conservation, the formations of Southern Command identified 75 sites at different locations. The Army will significantly assist in ameliorating the water crisis in respective areas.

On the directions of Headquarters, Dakshin Bharat Area, the AOC Centre was tasked by the Headquarters Telangana & Andhra Sub Area to develop an amrit sarovar. It did so in an area of 1.2 acres of land, which will aid boosting the groundwater level and provide a suitable habitat for local flora and fauna.
