58-foot floral carpet laid in Thrissur

Several youngsters visited the maidan to see the giant pookkalam' to take photographs and selfies.

Thrissur: The Southern Entrance Tower of Vadakkumnathan Temple on Thekkinkkadu Maidan in Thrissur where ‘Kudamatam’ (the exchange of designed parasols), the most colourful event of Thrissur Pooram is held, witnessed another spectacle on Atham day on Sunday. As in the previous years, ‘Thrissur Sayana Souhritha Kootayima’ laid a floral carpet which had a 58 foot-diameter in view of Onam Celebrations on Atham day.

(Photo: DC)This year District Tourism Promotion Council also joined hands with the Kootayima group by officially recognizing their endeavour in creating such a huge floral carpet. Several youngsters visited the maidan to see the giant ‘pookkalam’ to take photographs and selfies. The organizers of the event said that nearly 150 volunteers had been working for the last two days, purchasing flowers and preparing the design for the carpet.

Flowers weighing nearly a tonne were used to make the carpet in front of the temple tower on the maidan. Farm Minister V S Sunilkumar inaugurated the function with was attended by several people active in the cultural sphere of Thrissur. Co-operation and Tourism Minister A C Moideen attended the valedictory function at 5 p.m. and students of Kadavallur Government School performed Oanchavadhyam at the concluding ceremony.
