TMC moves Madras High Court to direct ECI to allot bicycle symbol
In the election held in 1996, the party won 20 out of 20 Parliamentary seats and won 39 out of 40 seats contested in the state assembly election.
Chennai: The Tamil Manila Congress (Moopanar) party has approached the Madras high court to direct the Election Commission of India to allot Bicycle symbol to it.
Justice N.Kirubakaran before whom the petition filed by TMC (Moopanar) by its President G.K.Vasan came up for hearing, posted the hearing after three weeks to enable the counsel for Election Commission of India to get instructions.
According to Vasan, G.K.Moopanar held various positions in Congress party and became the general secretary of All India Congress Committee and held the post for 8 years. He had a difference of opinion due to political reasons and therefore, he quit the congress and floated the regional party viz Tamil Manila Congress (Moopanar) in March 1996. On April 2, 1996, the ECI had recognized the party and allotted Bicycle symbol.
In the election held in 1996, the party won 20 out of 20 Parliamentary seats and won 39 out of 40 seats contested in the state assembly election. In 2001, the party won 23 seats in state assembly elections. While so, the founder president of TMC died in 2001 and thereafter, he was elected as president of the party.
