Call to turn detection centre a part of Kochi Cancer Research Centre
The demand to make it part of KCRC has come from the Justice V R Krishna Iyer Movement that spearheaded the campaign to set up KCRC.
Kochi: The pathetic condition of the Early Cancer Detection Centre at the prime plot at Kaloor in the city does not need any narration. Now a demand has come up to make it as an arm of the newly established Kochi Cancer Research Centre (KCRC) at Kalamassery so that patients have a meaningful sub-centre in the city to bank on. Currently the centre is under the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, and enough attention is not given to it and many patients keep away considering its poor exteriors and upkeep. The demand to make it part of KCRC has come from the Justice V R Krishna Iyer Movement that spearheaded the campaign to set up KCRC.
“The land and building of the Kaloor cancer detection centre belong to Kochi Corporation and the Corporation should also take the initiative to make it part of Kochi Cancer Research Centre so that patients are benefited and the condition of the centre improves. It can be made a city extension centre of KCRC. When more doctors and staff join KCRC’s new OP wing, they can make this detection centre more active. The State government should also take the initiative for this. The RCC should also help in revitalizing the centre,” said Dr N K Sanil Kumar, volunteer of Justice V R Krishna Iyer Movement. A group of activists led by current Oushadhi chairman Mr K R Viswambharan who is also part of the Justice Krishna Iyer Movement had tried to clear the grass which almost covered the compound some time ago. But the situation returned to the same with none making any concerted effort for its upkeep.
