Chennai: Victoria hostel student injured in wall collapse

Balu, a third-year B Com student, with hearing impairment, had fallen from the first floor of his hostel, while on way to the toilet on Tuesday night.

Chennai: Revealing the poor infrastructure facilities in a Presidency College hostel, a student and resident of the Victoria Men’s Hostel, suffered a fall due to the collapse of a dilapidated wall. Hospital officials at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), where he is admitted, said that his condition is stable.

Balu, a third-year B Com student, with hearing impairment, had fallen from the first floor of his hostel, while on way to the toilet on Tuesday night. Stating that a part of the corridor wall had fallen, a source from the college said, “It was late and the lights were off. Balu, who was on his way to the toilet, unintentionally walked off the level and fell down, suffering a fracture in the L-1 vertebra.”

“We immediately informed the Public Works Department and are trying to ensure safety arrangements are undertaken. The hostel, which is over 117 years old, houses over 400 students. We are taking this matter seriously and will try to make few renovations,” he added.

Stating that the student had suffered from spinal narrowing, Dr Narayansamy, Dean of the hospital, said, “We are closely following up the case and providing the best treatment to the student
