Chennai: Even though a month has passed after the eight stray dogs in Mugalivakkam were ruthlessly poisoned to death, Madras Veterinary College hospital is yet to submit the autopsy report, thus stalling the police enquiry.
An animal lover family, which sheltered the eight dogs, was dismayed after seeing the scattered, lifeless bodies of the canines on May 5. S. Jahnavi, the caretaker from the family recalled of how dogs collapsed to death. “We saw two dogs fighting for life and admitted them in the hospital. But it was already late,” said the animal lover.

From filing an FIR at Mangadu police station to petitioning the CM special cell, Jahnavi had followed all the legal formalities a month ago. But a setback in the enquiry has put her in a pall of gloom. “I am helpless and distressed. But I won’t give up,” she added.

When DC contacted the concerned police official, he said that he had submitted the reports to the veterinary college hospital. “A case has been registered under prevention of cruelty to animals act. Investigation can be carried out after the autopsy results are out. Every time we go to the hospital, we are told that the process is yet to be completed,” said the police official who refused to comment further.

Sources from the pathology department attributed the delay to the shortage of staff. “Many such cases are pending. The process is generally time consuming,” said the staff.
