Nirupama Rao bares No land for Hindu' charge
Her family has owned land in Malappuram for over a 100 years'.
Malappuram: India’s former foreign secretary Malappuram-born Nirupama Rao’s tweet against right wing hate campaign against Malappuram district has taken the twitteratti by storm. Ms Rao, who hails from Meempat family in Malappuram, lambasted at a tweet by a Twitter handle Somnath (@reachsom) which claimed that “except Muslims, nobody can buy land in Malappuram.” In a fitting reply, she tweeted: “That is an outright lie. I am from Malappuram, and my family has owned land there for over a hundred years. You are spreading hate.” Somnath’s hate filled comment on Malappuram was first appeared as a reply to Dr Shashi Tharoor’s tweet on Kerala.
Rao’s was replying to this. Instantly, the twitteratti who fight the right wing hatemongering gathered en masse below supporting her and, of course, some ranting religious hatred. Interestingly, a Twitter user also found the comment box the right place to give a grammar lesson. “The usage “has owned” present perfect tense denotes action started in the past and continues till today,” commented @sabathenomade.Many have also offered help to non-Muslims to find land in the district. Notably, Twitter users who are on a hatemongering spree under her tweet are from outside Kerala.
The 1973 batch former diplomat was born in Malappuram to Lt. Colonel P.V.N. Menon and Meempat Narayanikutty in 1950. Her ancestral home Meempat is situated at Munduparamba, three kilometres away from Malappuram town. She along with her husband and former chief secretary of Karnataka, Sudhakar Rao, had visited the family here last year on their 41st wedding anniversary.
