KOZHIKODE: The district chapter of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has  conducted the maximum number of inspections and registered  cases in the state. The officials collected Rs 2,11,500 as penalty from various food outlets and manufacturing units during the last four months.

The next in the list are  Ernakulum and Alappuzha districts that collected fines of nearly Rs 1.5 lakh and 1.10 lakh respectively.  According to the officials of FSSAI here, 369 inspections were conducted in the last four months.  Notices were  issued to 155 food outlets and manufacturing units, for violating  FSSAI norms.

“More than the food items supplied in these units we are worried about the packaged drinking water supplied in the district.  Among the 12 samples of water collected from various units, we found that nearly six of them were not supplying healthy and sterile drinking water,”  said P.K. Aleyamma, Assistant Commissioner, FSSAI. Two such outlets here were closed down, she added. In the  last four months,  98 samples of food and liquid products were taken and sent  for inspection.    “We have taken 10 criminal cases and 10 civil cases against various outlets and manufacturing units,”  she added.
