Admission queries flood govt schools in Malabar
Upgraded Nadakkavu School sets new trend
KOZHIKODE: Inquiries for admission are pouring into a few government schools in Malabar much before the beginning of the next academic year with students and teachers making a beeline to these schools. Thanks to PRISM (Promoting Regional schools to International Standards through Multiple interventions),a project that ensured world class standards in terms of academics and infrastructure, these schools include Government Girl’s VHSS, Nadakkavu, Government HSS, Karaparamba and Medical College campus HSS and also Government Boys School, Koyilandy.
This demand has finally impelled school authorities to create a systematic approach to the existing admission pattern. There is special consideration for students in a 5 kilometer radius of the institution and from financially poor backgrounds. The demand for Government schools started with the Nadakkavu School, which was recently raised to international standards under an innovative educational development project initiated by Pradeep Kumar MLA.
As per the admission pattern developed by Nadakkavu School, 40 percent is reserved for students coming from Government schools, 30 percent for aided school students, and the remaining 30 percent of seats has been allotted for students from other backgrounds including private or CBSE institutions. “Even though seats are allotted for separate category of students, our major preference is for students coming from nearby localities, no matter what the demand is”, said PK Saseendran, Principal, GVHSS.
“Last year we even had to introduce a new software in order to categorise the number of applicants, which was triple the number than previous years”, he said. Similar was the condition of two other institutions in the District that witnessed a huge flow of applicants during the previous academic year. “The development project adopted by the school was just completed, but the news of raising it to international standards was released much before, which has prompted parents to seek admission in the institution, which was earlier on the verge of closure due to the shortage of students”, said A Rema, Principal, Karaparamba GHSS.
