Chennai: In an order that would protect ecology of Pallikaranai marsh, the southern bench of National Green Tribunal has restrained the RTO Meenambakkam from putting up any construction in the marshland of Shollinganallur.

The marsh land, a breeding ground for fish and birds has shrunk to less than half of its original size due to encroachments. The Bench comprising Justice P. Jyothimani and expert member P.S. He told the court that the locality has characteristics of a marshland, dominated by thick vegetation.

It can be noted that the tribunal had earlier asked the respondents from
various departments to file their replies and imposed a fine of '10,000 on the Kancheepuram collector

One of the respondents, Kancheepuram collector, informed the tribunal that seven acres of land had been allotted to RTO, Kancheepuram, by state transport authorities for constructing a vehicle-detaining yard. “In an order dated January 18, 2013, the government had allotted 2.835 hectares in survey number 707/2 at Sholinganallur for Sholinganallur zonal transport office,” the Collector said.
