Ballari: Harikrishna Hebsur, a civil service aspirant who was arrested following protests by farmers over the Mahadayi dispute and lodged in Ballari central jail, was shifted to Dharwad central prison on Friday to enable him to appear for the UPSC civil service exams scheduled for August 7.

The shifting of Harikrishna from Ballari to Dharwad jail came in the wake of directions from the Principal District and Session Judge, Dharwad. Soon after his release, he charged that since his father, Lokanath G Hebasur, is president of the Kalasa-Banduri Horata Samiti, his family had been targeted.

“I was in my room preparing for the civil service exams when a police sub-inspector along with a few constables barged into my house and took me away,” he said adding that the police did not heed his plea that he was innocent and had never participated in the agitation.

" I was beaten up by the police and suffered injuries, but still I took it as a challenge to strive hard and pass the civil service exams so that I can serve the people and farmers,” Harikrishna said with confidence just before being shifted from Ballari to Dharwad with police escort.

When Harikrishna came out of the jail, emotions ran high with his mother, Ms Sujata, greeting him with tears.
