Tamil Nadu owned Aavin milk turns sour, 20 take ill

The State government on Saturday announced an increase in the prices of buffalo milk by Rs. 6 per litre to Rs. 41 per litre and Rs. 4 per litre to Rs. 32 per litre for cow milk.

Salem: The state-owned Aavin milk which was supplied to Sevvapet and neighbouring areas in Salem city turned sour and spoiled, leaving at least 20 kids and women with bouts of nausea on Thursday.

The residential colonies near the Salem Collectorate was in a grip of panic on Thursday evening as several children suffered from nausea and had to be rushed to hospital. All of them had consumed the Aavin milk bought on Thursday evening.

Residents complained that a bad odour emanated from the milk when they boiled it.When the children drank the milk, immediately they started vomitting, they alleged.

The Food Safety officials conducted an inspection at the houses on Bretts road and Sevvapet area on Friday morning and collected the milk samples.

“We inspected 50 households in Sevvapet area. At least 10 persons mostly children have suffered nausea after taking the spoiled milk,” the Food Safety officer, T.Anuradha said.

Meanwhile, the Salem Aavin general manager, Shanthi confirmed that the milk supplied to the Sevvapet area had turned sour and spoiled.

However, she said that the lorry operator had stationed the truck containing the milk sachets in scorching sun for two hours leading to the spoiling of the milk.

The contract given to the lorry operator for supplying milk had been cancelled following the incident, she said. “A report has been sent to the Aavin headquarters on the issue,” the Aavin official added.
