MADURAI: In an interesting development, an ‘RTI (Right to Information Act) act-ivist’ from Madurai has raised his voice in favour of the Manipur rights activist Irom Sharmila marrying her British partner Desmod Coutinho at Kodaikanal as planned.

K. Hakkim, founder of the ‘People’s Awareness Movement' in his petition sent to the sub-registrar, Kodaikanal, has urged that Irom Sha-rmila should be allowed to marry her fiancé as per the law of the land.

Sharmila had observed non-violence protest following the principles of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi and also contested in an Assembly election in Manipur before she had come to Kodaikanal hills in search of peace, said Hakkim.

Earlier S Selvagomathi, a human right activist and deputy dir-ector of SOCO Trust also expressed solidarity with her stating that no one has rights to interfere in the personal life of an individual.

Meanwhile, three persons have petitioned against their proposed marriage. Uzhavar Uzhaippalar Sangam founder leader R. Manigandan submitted a petition on Friday to the sub-registrar claiming that her stay could disturb peace in Kodaikanal.

The Hindu Makkal Katchi state general secretary, R. Ravikumar and V. Mahendran, a local DMDK functionary, also petitioned the sub-registrar's office.Sharmila and her would-be husband, Desmond Cou-tinho had submitted the-ir papers for their marriage  on July 12.
