Doubts on ‘cloud burst’ in Chalakudy region

Thrissur: Chalakudy region witnessed heavy rains on Monday morning with experts at atmospheric sciences department of CUSAT expressing doubts of a cloud burst.

The torrential downpour that started at 8.30 a.m. continued for four hours.

Environmentalist S. P. Ravi, a resident of Pariyaram six kilometres away from Chalakudy town, said that the intensity of the rains decreased only in the afternoon and ended by 4.30 p.m.

"With the rains retrieving in the afternoon, experts ruled out the possibility of a could burst," he said.

The intensity of Charpa waterfalls from which water flows into Chalakudy river upstream Athirapally waterfalls also increased considerably.

On Sunday morning, a mini-tornado had originated in Chalakudy River which travelled around two kilometres and ended by moving into to the coconut farms near Vettukadavu area.

A similar phenomenon of swirling winds had occurred in Chalakudy town last year during a spell of consecutive rainy days following the August deluge.  

Shutters of Poomala dam in Thrissur was opened with the water level reaching 28 ft and 10 inches. The permissible level is 29 ft.
