Warangal listed in Unesco’s Global Network of Learning Cities
This is the second recognition for Telangana in a year. Earlier, it recognised the Ramappa temple in Warangal dist. as a world heritage site
HYDERABAD: The Unesco on Monday listed Warangal in its Global Network of Learning Cities. This is the second recognition for Telangana in a year; the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation had recognised the Ramappa temple in the undivided Warangal district as a world heritage site.
The official Twitter handle of the permanent delegation of India to Unesco
reported on Twitter: “Warangal joins UNESCO Global Network of Learning
Cities!” NIlambur and Thrissur, both in Kerala, are the only other Indian
towns in the network.
Reacting to the development, Union culture minister G..Kishan Reddy thanked
Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the sustained efforts to get global
recognition showcasing the rich cultural heritage of India. There are 294 cities in 76 countries on the network, the Unesco website said. They cover a population of 25 crore.
The Unesco website said the Global Network of Learning Cities was an
international policy-oriented network providing inspiration, know-how and
best practice. “Learning cities at all stages of development can benefit
greatly from sharing ideas with other cities, as solutions for issues that
arise as one learning city develops may already exist in other cities,” the
website said.
Unesco said the network supports the achievement of all 17 sustainable
development goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 4, to ensure inclusive and
equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for
all, and SDG 11, to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe,
resilient and sustainable.
It said the network supported and improved the practice of lifelong learning
in the world’s cities by promoting policy dialogue and peer learning among
member cities; forging links; fostering partnerships; providing capacity
development; and developing instruments to encourage and recognize progress
made in building learning cities.
