Mangaluru: S Prabhakar Kamath (79), the founder of Mangaluru’s iconic ice cream brand 'Ideal' died at a private hospital on Saturday morning.
Kamath was admitted to hospital after he met with an accident on October 28. He is survived by his wife and three children.
Prabhakar Kamath who started business dealing in general items later shifted to the ice cream industry.
With 14 flavors Prabhakar Kamath had started Ideal’s Parlour on May 1, 1975, at Market Road, Mangaluru. A second outlet was started at Ganapathi High School in the same year and Pabba's in 1996. At present Ideal’s has 40-plus varieties of flavors, five parlors in Mangaluru City. Ideal has become a synonym for ice cream and is one of the popular ice cream brands in the country.
The ice cream network has crossed the Karnataka border too and extended to North Kerala and South Goa.
Elected representatives including Goa Assembly leader of the opposition Digambar Kamath, Mangaluru City south MLA Vedavyas Kamath, Mangaluru City North MLA Bharath Shetty, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel have condoled the demise of Prabhakar Kamath.
