Hyderabad: Two people suffered burn injuries in a burst of the Bagyalakshmi gas pipeline at Petbasheerabad on Monday afternoon, following which traffic was diverted and emergency measures taken for an hour following the incident.

Petbasheerabad police inspector M. Mahesh said the incident took place around 12.30 pm, when the pipeline burst during work on the service road near Jeedimetla village, on the Suchitra-Kompally route.

“At the same time, Sainath and Raju, who were working at an apparel showroom in Jeedimetla village, had gone out for tea. On their way back, they were smoking a cigarette when the gas leak took place, causing both Sainath and Raju to catch fire,” he said.

Sainath suffered 48 per cent burns, while Raju suffered 20 per cent burns, the inspector said, adding both were immediately admitted to a private hospital in the vicinity.

The police registered a case against the owner of the Bhagyalakshmi gas pipeline for negligence and careless work, which led to the pipeline's gas burst. Police said the incident led to a traffic backlog, which took over an hour to clear.

The owner of the gas pipeline did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
