Fake mobile wallet, bank links flood social media
Malicious software applications that offer cash back guarantees for purchases and other unrealistic offers are also active.
Hyderabad: Fake bank links promoting currency exchange and fake mobile wallet links are doing the rounds on WhatsApp and social media as the cash shortage shows no sign of abating. Malicious software applications that offer cash back guarantees for purchases and other unrealistic offers are also active. The intent is to steal the users’ information, cops say. Emails from anonymous people who offer to help exchange your black money have also been noticed.
Cyber Crime officials say these emails are sent in bulk by crooks. “Are you stranded with your old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes? Worry not! We change old notes for new acceptable currency of Rs 100, Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes as per your wish. Our commission is very low, minimum changeable amount is Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 crore. 100 per cent secrecy assured,” read one such email. With more people trying their hand at digital transactions for the first time, cyber criminals play on their ignorance. They create fake websites of banks and steal account information.
Stealing credit and debit card details could also increase through phishing mails and fake links. “A large section of uneducated people are being forced to use digital transactions. This would open up opportunities for criminals who use various ways to loot the unsuspecting victims,” said a Cyber Crime official. Debit card scamsters who call and ask for card details pretending to be bank officials offering new services are very active after demonetisation.
“Many gullible people are still giving away their credentials and card details and are falling prey to the scam. They do not think that banks are so crowded that bank officials do not have time to call them personally to provide services. In reality, no bank calls its customers for card details. Only criminals call you for such information,” warned Mr V.P. Tiwari, Cyber Crime inspector from Hyderabad.
