Tambaram Government Hospital awaiting expansion and better facilities

Chennai: Tambaram Government Hospital's trauma centre, which functions 24x7, is awaiting development in terms of expansion and better facilities.
Though the announcement for the same was made in July last year, the hospital is unsure how soon its plans can be fructified. The allocation of Rs 10 crore was made to set up the trauma care unit by the state government.
"The preliminary level of the launch is being processed. The hospital authorities are waiting for the approval of the building expansion plan," said Dr M. Inbavalli, Chief Medical Officer.
"The centre has to be expanded to set up instruments for trauma care. However, the proposal for the same remains in the pending list," she added. The Tambaram Taluk Hospital provides first aid to patients and stabilizes them before they are shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) for further treatment.
However, some serious trauma care cases cannot be handled by it. To end this grievance of the public, the trauma care unit was proposed. The hospital handles victims from accident-prone areas like GET Road and Mudichur Road. It allegedly drew flak from the public for not being properly equipped with instruments to handle trauma cases in its emergency care unit. "We have forwarded a list of necessary instruments, including CT scan, digital X-Ray and ultra sonogram and an anesthesia machine for the trauma centre to senior officials. They will be availed soon," said an official on account of anonymity.
The hospital has not had a full-time physician, but the announcement of the trauma care centre also stated that one would be provided, along with a neurosurgeon, an anesthetist an orthopedician and a neurologist.
However, the centre currently functions with doctors-in-charge from other hospitals that include a general surgeon and an orthopedic surgeon.
