Kozhikode: Homemakers with a charity mission
They have been organising exhibition of their products to raise funds for needy children.
KOZHIKODE: They are eight homemakers with a mission who have come together to provide relief to the children at the cancer ward of the Institute of Maternal and Child Health (IMCH) at Government Medical College Hospital here.
For the sixth year in a row, they have organised an exhibition of their hand-made products at Srishti art gallery, opposite Tagore centenary hall, to raise funds for the needy children. Last year, they had bought equipment for the ward, which included study materials, computer, DVD, printer, study table, toys and television, amounting to Rs 75,000, said Ms Premja Baburaj, one of the organisers.
The exhibition which will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. till April 10 was inaugurated by Mayor Thottathil Raveendran on Friday. "This time, the proceeds will go to the renovation of the ward. There is a huge rush for the products, including household items. Mostly, girls and homemakers are visiting the expo, apart from the frequent customers," said Ms Premja.
The products, including mural paintings, mural works on pots, lamp shades, crockery, sarees and dupattas, along with stoned jewellery, bags and bed spreads, are sold at affordable rates. All the sellers give 30 to 50 per cent of their profits to the IMCH ward. The other participants are Geetha Vasudevan, Praneetha Divakaran, Rugmini S. Nair, Latha Rajan, Radhika Ranjith, Veena Saboo and Anupama Sunil. As an extension of the programme, a five-day exhibition-cum-workshop will be held at Lalitha Kala Akademi art gallery in September. Twenty-five per cent of the sale proceeds would be handed over to the ward.
