PATHANAMTHITTA: The Union government will implement the Pamba Action Plan in a time-bound manner, a top official said here on Monday. “A detailed report will be prepared, and the issues including pollution of the river, encroachment along its banks, and sand mining will be studied in detail,” Central Water Commission chief engineer J.C. Ayer said.

“The reports that were prepared earlier and the petitions filed by different groups will also be referred,” he added. He was here heading a Central team that visited river Pamba in Pathanamthitta to prepare the action plan proposed to save the river.

Suresh Gopi M.P., who met the Central team at the Pathanamthitta guesthouse, also wanted to ensure that the money allocated by the Centre for the plan is not diverted to other projects. “A project for Pamba waste eradication was declared earlier. However, it did not take off. Such instances should not be repeated,” Mr Gopi said.

The Central team also held discussions with former MG University VC Dr A.V. George, environmental activists K.K. Gopinathan Nair, P.N.S. Pillai, and Jayasankar on river pollution. The team included Central ground water board regional director V. Kunjambu, Central Water Commission member Dr R.N. Shankva and National River Water Authority joint director Vinod Singh.
