Harbour engineering department to take up circuit beach project

Facilities will be provided at the beaches for staging entertainment programmes during holidays.

KOCHI: Giving a big boost to the proposed circuit beach project along the Vypeen coast connecting nine beaches there including several non-descript beaches, the State Government has decided to award the implementation of the project to the Harbour Engineering Department. Vypeen MLA S. Sarma told DC on Sunday that tenders for the development works will be floated by August end and the construction works will start in September.  “The works will be awarded considering the economic and technological aspects. The parent roads connecting the beaches will be developed spending Rs 75 crore and the BMBC method will be used for tarring to ensure strong roads,” Mr Sarma said.

The beaches to be developed and connected in a circuit are Puthuvype, Chappa, Njarakkal, Nayarambalam, Chathanad, Kuzhippilli, Raktheswari, Munambam and Cherayi. “Eighteen break waters (pulimuttu) will be built along 25 km area connecting these beaches to expand the beaches and to make it attractive and enjoyable for tourists. “The beach development works are expected to cost Rs 4.5 crore while the break water works will cost Rs 18 crore. Overall the project will come close to Rs 100 crore,” Mr Sarma said.

He also said that a people’s committee has been formed for the timely implementation of the project which will be presided over the MLA himself and comprises among others the presidents of the respective panchayats.  “The committee will sort out any local issue that may come in the way of the project,” the MLA added. Facilities will be provided at the beaches for staging entertainment programmes during holidays.
